Core Web Vitals in 2026: The Complete Guide for Non-Engineers

Performance isn't a vanity metric — it's a revenue metric. Google has confirmed that Core Web Vitals are a ranking signal, and study after study shows that faster sites convert better.

The three metrics that matter

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how long the main content takes to appear. Aim for under 2.5 seconds. The biggest culprits are unoptimized hero images and render-blocking JavaScript.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP) replaced FID in 2024. It measures responsiveness — how quickly your page reacts when a user taps or clicks. Target under 200ms. Heavy JavaScript and third-party scripts are the usual offenders.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures visual stability — how much the page jumps around as it loads. Keep it under 0.1. Images without dimensions and injected ads cause most layout shifts.

Where to start

Run your site through Google's PageSpeed Insights. It will tell you exactly which metric is failing and why. From there, the fixes usually fall into four buckets: image optimization, JavaScript reduction, server response time, and stable layout.

If that feels overwhelming, that's what our free website audit is for. We'll run the diagnostics and hand you a prioritized fix list — no obligation.
